The landscape is a spectacular rocky amphitheater between sandstone vaults and travertines carved over millennia by the river's action.

Fields of crops, pine trees, and holm oaks dominate the scenery. And in the midst, a waterfall of turquoise waters appears like a mirage, nestled between sandstone and travertine walls that were formed during the Quaternary: a refreshing green oasis amidst the steppe-like landscape, considered one of the five Natural Monuments of the Murcia region for its "uniqueness, beauty, and rarity of natural elements and geological formations," as described by the sterile and notarized language of the Royal Decree of 2022 that declared this site a Protected Natural Space, a natural sanctuary that also holds ancient legends and promises of summer miracles.

A Monumental Geological Rarity

Salto del Usero is a hydrological anomaly in arid lands, gifted to us by the Mula River as it passes through the El Molinar site (also an anomaly of underground waters that is present in the Archena Spa, inspired by the Alhambra). Nestled in the northwest slope of the Castellar hill, the river has carved a hollow in the rock resembling a natural amphitheater. Earlier, it presents a cultural landscape dotted with up to twelve flour mills that emerged to harness the power of the water - the Molino de Arriba, dating back to 1684, is the oldest of the mills and is located just a few meters away.

The folds of the rock mark past time like the fossilized rings of a tree trunk. The rock vaults that have formed are also a testament to that slow and patient geological work that has sculpted the landscape between sandstones and travertines, composing a stage where rounded shapes blend with arid textures.

When you arrive at Salto del Usero in the summer, you are greeted by the shade and shelter provided by the riparian vegetation -willows, poplars, and oleanders-, while the constant sound of water sets the pace of time: it is the perfect refuge from the relentless sun of Murcia. This is why it has become a very popular bathing spot, which has led to the implementation of a prior reservation system with time slots and limited capacity, thus protecting its delicate and fragile ecosystem from massive impact.

And a Legendary Stage

It's not just water that flows at Salto del Usero; it also carries history, tradition, and magic. Here lies one of the most evocative legends of Murcian folklore: the story of the Moorish princess and the Christian prince. Every night of San Juan, according to tradition, the spirit of the princess descends from the Moorish fortress that crowns the Castellar mountain, seeking her beloved, with whom she used to meet in secret by the waters of the waterfall. But as always happens in these stories, something went wrong.

The prince never arrived for their last meeting and she, desperate, submerged herself in the pool until she vanished. That is why her soul returns every June 23, eternally repeating her fruitless search despite the spell that people cast in the form of "La Bajada de la Mora," a popular representation that gathers hundreds of people each year, turning the night of San Juan into the most special moment of the festive calendar in the municipality of Bullas. The waters of the waterfall, they say, take on purifying and miraculous properties on this date. What a chance to take a refreshing dip.
